We’ve written before about the inaccuracy of collecting customer data, like email addresses, with paper signup forms. The practice is inaccurate and not secure. You need a more surefire way to grow your email marketing list accurately and securely, and a great way to do that is by creating a text-to-join feature for your email list.

By collecting email addresses by SMS text message, you can grow your list wherever customers are engaging with your brand and have their mobile device handy:

  • Ads on the bus stop
  • Events
  • Videos
  • Product packaging
  • In-store

Signal makes it easy to collect customer data via SMS. Here’s how to do it.

If you already have an SMS list

If you already have a list of SMS contacts you’d like to collect email addresses from, simply create a new text message in Signal by selecting Text Message > New Text Message.

In your Message, create a compelling call to action, asking members to text back with their email addresses. (We suggest offering an incentive like a coupon, which can be configured to automatically dispatch via email once text club members opt-in.)

Check the box that says, “Request information from recipients,” and from the drop-down menu, select Email address. Once you select the Email address form field, a second drop-down will appear asking you to select the list you want to prompt respondents to join. This means you can put the email addresses you collect in this text campaign into any new or existing list you want.

Then all you need to do is create an auto response for both valid and invalid data (something like, “Thanks! Check your email,” or, “Sorry, your email address wasn’t formatted correctly.”). Then select the list(s) you wish to send to, and send.

As email addresses are collected and customers confirm their opt-in, their email addresses will be added to the list you specified.

If you want to create a text-to-join call to action

If you don’t already have an SMS marketing list but want to include a call to action on an advertisement or in-store banner, you’ll need to create a new list by going to People > Lists > Create a List. Name your list and enable it for text.

Once you click Create you’ll be redirected to the list overview page, and from here, click Text Message Settings. Scroll down and configure your Post Opt-in Message exactly like the settings outlined below.
